Are videos captioned?
Answer: Sometimes
Score: 1
Notes: The videos usually appear with open captions in a split screen where the current speakers words are highlighted as they are said. There is often but not always a close-captioned option as well, which can be turned on and off. I did find a Spanish video that included Spanish subtitles in the original source, but did not include either close-captioning or open captioning. In addition, I watched a Spanish video where the transcript mirrored the embedded English subtitles, but there was no option for a transcript or CCing of the actual Spanish words.
If captions are closed, and need to be turned on by the user, is that process straightforward and intuitive?
Answer: Always
Score: 2
Notes: Usually, close-captioning exists in ADDITION to the open captioning, and there is an obvious CC box under the screen to turn them on and off. I believe on is the default. Not every video has this, however, but almost all have a dynamic transcript. I have seen the open-captioning transcript without the CC, but never the other way around.
Are captions typo-free and grammatically correct (unless slang and grammatical errors are intentionally used in the video)?
Answer: Always
Score: 2
Notes: In all the examples I viewed, everything has been done correctly.
Does caption placement avoid blocking any important visual components necessary to understand the video?
Answer: Sometimes
Score: 1
Notes: It appears at the bottom of the screen, so presumably it could be in the way if there was information there.
Are the captions in sync with spoken words?
Answer: Always
Score: 2
Notes:
For videos that contain captions, are transcripts provided?
Answer: Always
Score: 2
Notes:
For videos that do not contain captions, are transcripts provided?
Answer: Sometimes
Score: 1
Notes: I found only one video without a transcript.
Do videos include described video, or if not, is there a text equivalent of the video provided on the same page or via a link?
Answer: Never
Score: 0
Notes: There is a transcript of the dialogue with some description of sounds e.g. (music) but no description of the visuals.
If the video includes described video or a text equivalent of the video, is it an accurate description of the video contents?
Answer: Never
Score: 0
Notes:
If a transcript is provided, does it accurately capture the content of the audio?
Answer: Not Applicable
