Positioning of Images
Question Answer Notes Images
Are the images positioned prominently and easy to find? Sometimes Home page: corporate logo top left; block of small corporate logos mid-page; sequence of banners that are image files that automatically change, so some are "hidden"; Top subjects page: image as text (corporate logo) is in top left corner; there are images that are buttons for Film clips and film clips with learning guides across the middle of the page...[not sure that these are obvious] advanced search page NA The results page: images include the video covers, and the corporate logo at the top. All easy to find item records 1: buttons to play video are images, image of video cover, corporate logo. All easy to find 2 "blackberry"...buttons to play video are in a stack with no white space. Location not hard to find though. 3 All easy to find help pages: NA Technical support page: corporate logo at the top (easy), image at bottom for advertisement login: NA create an account pages: NA search history pages: NA bookmark page: NA
Functional images embedded in the background
Question Answer Notes Images
Are there functional images embedded in the background? Never
Presence of Icons
Question Answer Notes Images
Are there icons where appropriate, such as icons to indicate PDF Full Text, Download, Folder, Citation, etc? Sometimes Most icons are appropriate and logical. The most important icon is the "play" icon under each video. This is not an article database, so there are no PDFs. There is no option to download the films for offline use. Icons for social media are far off to the right of the main pane of the Technological Support page. I didn't even notice them until I was tabbing and noticed that the focus did not go where I expected it to go during LEAP testing.
Alt Text
Question Answer Notes Images
Do informative images contain appropriate alt text or an appropriate textual alternative? Sometimes specific subject/genre page (For example "Horror"): there are images of covers of films, which have a text link underneath that expresses the title of the the film, but all alt text entries identically say "click for full title information" for each of the images, which generates alerts in Wave;
Do functional images contain appropriate alt text or an appropriate textual alternative? Sometimes home page: "learn more" alt text is uninformative: "blue button"; Specific subject page: "submit" and "reset" buttons Wave says are "empty" of alt text Technical support page: "send" and "reset" buttons have no alt text; There is a tool to verify that the user is a human, which does not appear to have alt text. Contact us page: verify you are human link, Wave says "A form label is present, but it is not correctly associated with a form control"
Do images used as text contain appropriate alt text or an appropriate textual alternative? Always Only the logo is a case of informative text. Wave identifies the alt text as "criterionondemand.com", which is fine.

Content Scaling

Question Answer Notes Images
When zoomed in at 200%, is text intact, readable, and not cut off? Always Results page: Pass, though items in left menu are right on the edge of the screen, especially in French version of pages.
Are images clear and unpixelated at 200%? Sometimes Company logo pixelates. Icons for French version of pages for Anglais, Ouverture de session, and Recherche de titre pixelate. Text in main tabs across top of the page pixelates Contact us page has a verification tool, and the flying letters in the box that the reader must interpret pixelate.
Is horizontal scrolling minimized at 200%? Sometimes Most pages require scrolling when re-sized. Some of the French pages are better than the English pages.

Colour and Contrast

Question Answer Notes Images
Do text and images have a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1? Sometimes Home: There is unacceptable contrast in the text on the buttons to toggle to French (from English view), across the top menu tabs when they are highlighted in green (when that tab is active), and the strip of text items along the bottom of the screen, place holder text in the search bar is unacceptably low contrast. When tabs have a drop down list, and one thing in the list receives focus, the item turns brick red, and when this happens the text is unreadable due to lack of contrast. Top subject page: The text on each button has unacceptable contrast Contact us page: low contrast for link text (green), for example "email us" and "click here" Item page: Pass

Colour

Question Answer Notes Images
Do colour coded graphs have text equivalents? Not Applicable There are no colour coded graphs.
Are blocks of content separated from one another using visual separation (such as whitespace or borders)? Always
Are text alternatives provided where colour is used to indicate an action? Not Applicable Colour is not required to indicate an action. On the Home page Horizontal Tabs that are active become green, but this is self-evident.

Text to speech

Question Answer Notes Images
Is there a choice embedded within the database that offers text to speech or read aloud options? Never

Clustered Links

Question Answer Notes Images
Using your mouse, is the clickable area around links and buttons large enough for users to see and activate easily? Sometimes The results pages for individual films contain buttons for the various formats of the film (such as a version with a French overdub, closed captioning, descriptive video), which are stacked vertically, but there is almost no space between them. This is a critical function in the resource and could be improved. The left menu items are bounded by horizontal division lines, which may make the links harder to see. The Technical support page has 3 buttons for links to social media which are in a very tight cluster on the right of the screen, and the buttons are very small, probably NOT easy to see and activate with a mouse. In contrast, the area around the buttons on the "top subjects" page is good.
Using your mouse to test links, are links and buttons far enough apart for users to accurately activate? Sometimes The results pages for individual films contain buttons for the various formats of the film (such as a version with a French overdub, closed captioning, descriptive video), which are stacked vertically, but there is almost no space between them. This is a critical function in the resource and could be improved. In contrast, the area around the buttons on the "top subjects" page is good.
Using any method to test links, are all links and buttons functional (i.e., not dead)? Sometimes "Log In" button does not seem to do anything that has to do with logging in...it generates a search page with the search "*". Under the tab "about Criterion on demand" there is a menu choice for "Title suggestions". The actual page for this link loads in a flicker...I couldn't even see it for the first 3 days that I looked at this website. A pop up appears instead that asks clients to do some research. This pop up seems to be on a timer and disappears (10 seconds later...I timed it), finally revealing the hidden "title suggestions form". There is a good chance that this form is effectively inaccessible to all users. Clipshout function has many results that will not individually open to play, due to 500 "internal server error". The "top subjects" page is missing a link to the home page via the corporate logo in the top left corner. In the French version of the site, under technical support, the recaptcha is generating an error. Several of the buttons on the French version of the pages, and options in drop down menus have not been translated into French. Accueil: "Back to top" in bread crumbs Home is not translated as "accueil", as it should be. Rentable: incomplete typing of link name "cliqu" should be "cliquez ici" Soutien Technique: Sentence not translated: If you experience difficulties logging in automatically, please click on this link and enter your user name and password. No translation for buttons "Send" and "Reset" Contactez-nous: Recaptcha is not translated. It says "Verify you are human"...link says "refresh" No translation for "Send" button. Ouverture de session icon in top right generates 404 error. Silverlight information is in English only. On results pages for genres in French, the hint is untranslated: (hint search may be revised at bottom of page) There is no translation for "submit" and "reset". In a dropdown menu there is an untranslated "poster layout". Under "langue" dropdown, none of the languages have been translated into French (for example "Chinese" should say "Chinois"). There is no translation of "Country of Origin", and the drop down list of country names has not been translated (for example, Australia should be Australie). If someone enters information in a form, and there are errors that generate corrections message(s), the "reset" button does not work. The French version of the website is missing a page to allow clients to suggest titles...there is no equivalent link page to the one in English that says "Title suggestions"
Are links or buttons accessible via keyboard navigation? Always With the exception of the link to the corporate logo on the top subjects page, which is missing. The tab button finds all the links, but when you use tab to navigate, the top menu tabs (especially "About Criterion on Demand" and "Why Criterion") do not visibly open (though these are drop down lists), so it is unclear to the user which link in a given drop down list is receiving focus except by looking at the address for that link in the bottom of the screen.

Dynamic content

Question Answer Notes Images
Can users pause carousel movement? Sometimes The French home page has a carousel with a pause button mid-pane. The English screen does not.
Is all functionality, including navigating between carousel items, operable by keyboard? Never Neither home page carousel (English or French) appears to be accessible when navigating with tab keys.

Liquid layout

Question Answer Notes Images
Is the order of the text preserved at all screen resolutions, without overlap? Always The order of the text is preserved for all devices. However, on the iphone there is a lot of scrolling both vertically and horizontally. The fit is much better on an ipad screen, though there is still some scrolling.
Do images avoid overlapping at all screen resolutions? Always The images never overlap on devices. However, on the iphone there is a lot of scrolling both vertically and horizontally. The fit is much better on an ipad screen, though there is still some scrolling.
Is the overall reading experience preserved at all screen resolutions? Sometimes On the ipad, the overall reading experience is nearly preserved, with some scrolling. On the iphone the reading experience is not preserved. The content is present but the scrolling required is immensely frustrating.

Assessment for Criterion-on-Demand by Lambton - Module 2: Interface Navigation | Status: Complete | Grade: C+

Labels and Instructions for Interactive Elements

Question Answer Notes Images
Are user input fields accompanied by clear instructions on what the user needs to do to successfully complete the form? Sometimes There are forms at: "Title suggestions", "Technical support" and "Contact us" Search bars are either unlabeled or only given a title (rather than a label). "Send" button on forms does not seem to be attached to a label, or the label is blank. Most fields are appropriately labelled, according to WAVE.
Do user input fields contain labels in addition to overall instructions mentioned above? Sometimes There are forms at: "Title suggestions", "Technical support" and "Contact us" Search bars are either unlabeled or only given a title (rather than a label) "Send" button on forms does not seem to be attached to a label, or the label is blank. Most fields are appropriately labelled, according to WAVE.
Are descriptions for fields and boxes easy to understand? Always Descriptions of fields and boxes are easy to understand, with the exception of the "Title suggestions" form, which is not easily accessible for ANY user.
Are labels placed above the user input fields and clearly associated with each field? Sometimes On the Technical support page, the labels for the "Verify you are a human" Recaptcha and "Difficulties you are experiencing?" are listed by WAVE as "orphaned form label": A form label is present, but it is not correctly associated with a form control. A similar error is present with the "Verify you are a human" on the "Contact us" form page.
Are text cues for coloured form control labels available? Not Applicable No coloured form control labels identified.
Are other visual indicators provided consistently, such as an asterisk for required form fields? Sometimes There are asterisks on the "Title Suggestions", "Technical suppport" and "Contact us" form, but there is nothing on these pages that explains that this symbol means that a given field is required. If fields with asterisks are not filled in, and the user clicks send, the system generates a "please complete all required fields" message and highlights in red text with instructions the specific fields which must be corrected.

Error Prevention

Question Answer Notes Images
Are user input fields either reversible, checked, or confirmed? One of the three is acceptable. Always Forms are checked. There is a reset button and a send button on the forms for Technical support and contact us, but there is only a send button for the Title suggestion form.

Error Reports

Question Answer Notes Images
Are alert messages clearly visible to the user, either at the top of the form field, inline, or through a dialog box? Always
Do alert messages clearly indicate the field in which the error has occurred and a description of the error and the fix? Always
Is the user able to easily access the user input field to correct the error? Always
Is the user able to resubmit the form and re-validate their submission? Always
Do error reports follow a logical reading and navigation order? Always The verify you are a human Recaptcha resets when the client has made an error entering another field. The verification field is NOT highlighted as needing to be re-entered, which in turn generates an error that DOES identify the Recaptcha re-entry requirement.

Search function spell-check

Question Answer Notes Images
When a user spells a word incorrectly, does the search function offer spelling suggestions or synonyms? Never I tried "capot" and it did not find Capote. The database does contain the film "Capote".

Functionality of Interactive Elements

Question Answer Notes Images
Are icons such as to save, download, or print consistent across the site? Sometimes This is almost a Not applicable. There are very few icons across the site. There is a search bar on the home page, and an advanced search on the bottom of each genre in the "top subjects" list. The search bars have a button that says "search", and the advanced search has a button that says "submit".
Is alternative text clear and consistent for each icon type? Sometimes There are very few icons in this electronic resource. There are buttons for "play", but these do not appear to be labeled, and the resources they link to are not differentiated with alt text. There are links to social media on some pages. These are labeled with alt text, though they still have the old logo for Twitter up.
Are actions consistently labelled across the site? For example, the “search” button is always labeled “search”. Sometimes There are very few icons in this electronic resource. There are buttons for "play", but these do not appear to be labeled, and the resources they link to are not differentiated with alt text. Some forms have a "send" button paired with a "reset" button, but not all.
Are icons that have adjacent links consistent? Sometimes The play icons are next to differentiated links to videos. For example one "play" icon will be for an English closed captioned track, while another "play" icon may be for the French audio with English subtitles.
Can the purpose of each link be determined from the link text alone? Sometimes There are some links that appear to be mis-matched. For example, on the "Technical support" page, there is a generic sounding "click here" link, in a sentence that says "Click here to Log In to Criterion-on-Demand", but this link actually takes the client to the "top subjects" page, not a log in page. There are TWO "click here" links on the Technical support page, which go to different places. Under "why Criterion", in the hidden drop down text section "customization", there is another "click here" link in a phrase which says "Can't Find a Title? Request It by Clicking Here", which goes to the Title suggestions page, which as previously described, quickly skips to a pop up which ISN'T the suggestions form, and takes ten more seconds to actually load the suggestions form. There are various ways to get to the Contact us page, through links that say Contact us and/or Submit an inquiry. The actual contact us page has "help" at the top...the phrase "contact us" comes later down the page. There are two "learn more" links on the home page. The first one takes the client to the "top subjects" page, which doesn't seem to be related to the content it came from on the first page. I was expecting more company information perhaps, or some statistics about the collection maybe, not the page to browse the collection. I suspect that there is an orphan page...

Consistent Navigation

Question Answer Notes Images
Does the eresource have a consistent layout and navigation across all pages? Sometimes There is a link at the top of the home page to toggle between English and French versions of the page, but this disappears from the other pages. It is not present on the "top subject" page that our own college links to as the entry point to the database. The ribbon menu across the top of the screen is fairly consistent, with access to technical support and contact us. There is a "back to the top" button on the home page, but it is missing from the "top subjects" page The "top subjects" page has a very handy collection of links at the bottom of the screen for resources such as "films by rating" and "future withdrawals", which are in a location that usually is for links like "contact us"...These links are effectively lost except to the intrepid, and bury the usual links someone might look for at the bottom of these pages like "terms of use". Note that OTHER pages have something else at the the bottom of the screen that is missing on this page. The other pages have links to Terms of use, cookies and privacy...
Are search fields located in the same places throughout the website? Sometimes Home: in top right About: in top right Why: top right top subjects: upper left, and bottom of the page results page: no search bar at top, but yes bottom of the page item page: no search bar at all...must either use back button or click tiny link on bottom menu for "Quick search"
Do other features occur in the same place throughout the website? Sometimes There is a link at the top of the home page to toggle between English and French versions of the page, but this disappears from the other pages. It is not present on the "top subject" page that our own college links to as the entry point to the database. There are multiple places on some pages to access the "contact us" form. There is a "back to the top" button on the home page, but it is missing from the "top subjects" page
Are links, buttons, images, and other components that are used repeatedly throughout a website labeled consistently? Sometimes Some buttons are labelled "send", others "submit", others "search" Contact us is variously connected with: "submit an inquiry", "contact us" tab, "email us" link from the contact us page

Pop-up windows/Interruptions

Question Answer Notes Images
Does the electronic resource avoid the use of pop-up windows which open automatically in a new tab if a user clicks on a button? Sometimes If the user clicks on the ribbon menu item "about criterion on demand" and then in the drop down list selects "title suggestions", a pop up on a ten second timer appears immediately over top of the form that is actually the "title suggestions page".
Does the database avoid launching pop-up windows automatically when the database is loaded? Always
Where pop-ups occur, are users able to postpone or suppress any pop-ups? Never There is a pop up on the page for "title suggestions". There isn't an "x" button to close it before the ten seconds on its timer is up.
Does the database avoid launching pages in a new browser window with the usual browser controls missing? Always Pages always launch in the same window, with the usual browser controls.

Headers

Question Answer Notes Images
Is page content subdivided hierarchically into appropriate headings and tagged appropriately? Never There are headings but they are not consistently and logically applied...they appear to have more to do with the font size than the organization of the page.
Are headings concise and clear, and accurately reflect the content under that heading? Never Heading values do not have to do with the organization of the material.

Menus

Question Answer Notes Images
Do database page menus have a reasonable number of navigation items and drop-down options? Always
Does the main navigation and drop-downs contain a reasonable number of menu items? Always
Can all menus and submenus be accessed with screen readers and via keyboard navigation? Sometimes Keyboard navigation: The drop down menus attached to the ribbon tabs are accessible with the keyboard by tabbing, but do not display like they do when a mouse clicks on a tab. It is hard to know what has received focus unless one sees the address listed at the bottom of the screen. alt+down doesn't work. Arrow keys do not work. Screen reader NVDA: I was unable to find a way to open these tabs (without the mouse) when using NVDA.

Change of context

Question Answer Notes Images
Does the “results” page or item record view avoid opening in a new tab without a warning? Always The tab you are in stays the same and the results page loads into that same tab.
Is there an "update now" button that requests a refresh of content rather than automatically updating the content? Not Applicable This isn't an information database.
Does the database avoid automatic redirection? Always There are redirects with regard to "Clipshout" products from the top subjects pages, but you have to click on a link to Clipshout to have that happen; the redirects are not automatic.

Change of Context: Focus

Question Answer Notes Images
Does the form refrain from submitting automatically when a component receives focus? Always Forms do not submit unless a button is selected.
Does the database avoid launching new windows when a component receives focus? Always New windows do not launch unless a component is selected.
Does the database avoid change of focus when a component receives focus? Always When we mouse over the choices in the drop down menus under the ribbon tab menu, the page does not automatically resolve to that subpage. It is however hard to tell that these sub menu drop down menus are receiving focus at all, when tabbing.
Are you able to tab through a page using keyboard navigation without the keyboard focus moving away from the control? Always

Assessment for Criterion-on-Demand by Lambton - Module 3: Interface Structure | Status: Complete | Grade: C

Navigation Links

Question Answer Notes Images
Can the purpose of each link can be determined from the link text, or from the link text together with its surrounding context? Sometimes Home: There are two links that say "learn more" on this page (which is confusing) advanced search page = "top subjects"=Search by subject: There are 2 links to Clipshout which are not labelled properly (for sighted users or users of a screen reader) and thus it is impossible to distinguish between the two and to understand how they relate to the page of subjects on the rest of the page. The results page: no discernable issues item records: There are buttons for "play", but these do not appear to be labeled, and the resources they link to are not differentiated with alt text. help pages = Technical support: There are some links that appear to be mis-matched. For example, on the "Technical support" page, there is a generic sounding "click here" link, in a sentence that says "Click here to Log In to Criterion-on-Demand", but this link actually takes the client to the "top subjects" page, not a log in page. There are TWO "click here" links on the Technical support page, which go to different places. login: link when present does not appear to attach to a login page. [Need to verify this offsite ***] create an account pages: not applicable [Need to verify offsite ***] search history page: not applicable bookmark pages: not applicable

Keyboard Navigation

Question Answer Notes Images
Can keyboard focus be moved to all page elements? Sometimes I am unable to use the tab key to move the visible focus to the drop down lists on the tabs in the ribbon menu. From the "about Criterion" tab, I cannot see the focus on "customer testimonials" and "title suggestions". Under "why criterion" I cannot see the focus on "customization" "large film library" "reliability" "bilingual" "key features" "third party content" "cost effective" "ease of access"
If moving keyboard focus away from a component requires more than arrow or tab keys, is this clearly indicated on the page? Not Applicable I did not find any traps, unless Recaptcha can be considered a trap, since it hesitates when I try to checkmark it with keystrokes, and then I am unable to navigate away until it "decides".
Is default keyboard navigation order logical and intuitive, following the visual flow of the page as described above? Sometimes There are social media icons on the lower right hand side of the screen which interrupt the order of the keyboard navigation. They are not present on all pages, such as the "top subjects" = "search by genre" page. The focus is not evident when the tab moves the focus to submenu items on the horizontal ribbon menu, as the drop down list does not visually open unless a mouse clicks on the parent tab. The focus is also hard to see...it is a very thin line square of very low contrast to the dark tabs, almost invisible. It is very easy for the user to become lost as the focus is hard to see at best and "disappears" when it goes down the drop down lists that are not visibly opening on the page. On pages with a "log in" and "French" button, the focus goes from the Log in button at the right to the French button at the left of the log in button, which is the reverse from the logical order on the page.
When using a keyboard to navigate the interface, is the keyboard focus indicator visible? Sometimes The keyboard focus indicator disappears when the ribbon menu goes to submenus in drop downs that do not actually open. From the "about Criterion" tab, I cannot see the focus on "customer testimonials" and "title suggestions". Under "why criterion" I cannot see the focus on "customization" "large film library" "reliability" "bilingual" "key features" "third party content" "cost effective" "ease of access" The keyboard focus indicator also seems to vanish when it goes to the social media links, though they are actually highlighted...they are very small. The keyboard focus indicator is a very thin line, of low contrast with the items it is outlining. It is frequently invisible. I would rather say "rarely visible" than even sometimes visible.
Does all interactive functionality work via keyboard, and does it behave consistently and as expected? Sometimes I am not sure if Recaptcha functions with the keyboard or not. Sometimes it hesitates and sometimes it eventually puts a check mark in. There are no options to do an audio Recaptcha in lieu of a visual test. This may mean that it is hard for someone with accessibility issues to submit a form for technical support, title suggestions, or just to contact the company.
Does focus order move sequentially across form fields? Always The forms are linear, so yes the focus moves from top to bottom without an issue.

Skip Links

Question Answer Notes Images
Are there skip links (either visible or invisible)? Sometimes Some pages have a "back to the top" skip link visible at the bottom right side of the page. These are the only skip links I found.
Are skip links visible or invisible? Always visible
Are skip links (visible or invisible) positioned prominently near the beginning of the page? Never There are no skip links at the top of the pages.
Are skip links labelled properly? Always
Are skip links accessible via keyboard? Always But it is very hard to tell that the skip link has received focus.
Do anchors (link destinations) appear at the beginning of the relevant content? Never
Do skip navigation controls appear in the same place on every page? Always

Tables

Question Answer Notes Images
Does the reader capture accurate information as it appears in the table and the columns and rows? Not Applicable No tables in this resource.

Frames

Question Answer Notes Images
Does the screen reader successfully navigate from one frame to another? Not Applicable There do not appear to be frames in these web pages. I checked with inspect and there are no tags with <frame> or <iframe>. The screen reader NVDA says "no previous frame" when I try to use shift+m.
Does each frame have a meaningful title that tells the user the purpose of the frame? Not Applicable There do not appear to be frames in these web pages. I checked with inspect and there are no tags with <frame> or <iframe>. The screen reader NVDA says "no previous frame" when I try to use shift+m.
When navigating the page using keyboard navigation, is the user able to navigate effectively from one frame to the next? Not Applicable There do not appear to be frames in these web pages. I checked with inspect and there are no tags with <frame> or <iframe>. The screen reader NVDA says "no previous frame" when I try to use shift+m.

Video Captions

Question Answer Notes Images
Are videos captioned? Sometimes Open captions are frequently available, but not always. Films do not always have an option of a version with captions in English. Films with English captions do not necessarily have a version with captions in French.
If captions are closed, and need to be turned on by the user, is that process straightforward and intuitive? Not Applicable The user selects the track that they are going to play from the Criterion website. Once the option for a captioned version to stream is activated there is no way to toggle the captions off.
Are captions typo-free and grammatically correct (unless slang and grammatical errors are intentionally used in the video)? Sometimes I looked at the "sous titres" in French for Ben Hur, and noted that the subtitles are not word for word what the narrator and/or characters say, though they are grammatically correct, and accurate in describing what is happening in the story. I looked at English captions for "Bean", "Elvis" and they were accurate and typo-free and grammatically correct.

Do videos include described video, or if not, is there a text equivalent of the video provided on the same page or via a link? Sometimes It is rare, but some films have an option for "descriptive audio", for example "DC league of super pets". The description only happens when there is no character dialogue, so some details are missed. "The eyes of Tammy Faye": As above "Avatar the way of water": As above There is never a text equivalent of the video provided.
If the video includes described video or a text equivalent of the video, is it an accurate description of the video contents? Sometimes It is rare, but some films have an option for "descriptive audio", for example "DC league of super pets". The description only happens when there is no character dialogue, so some details are missed. "The eyes of Tammy Faye": As above, but seems accurate "Avatar the way of water": As above, but seems accurate I am going to assume that the quality of the described video depends on the company that made the movie, that Criterion has no real control over whether there are captions of any kind, including described video, apart from as a demographic requirement for success in their business. There is never a text equivalent of the video provided.
